Volatility Explained Perfectly

Paper Gains Newsletter

This Tweet went viral recently and does such a great job explaining markets and investing. Not many people have it in them to ride that rollercoaster.

Of all the changes, going from $170k to $110 million would have been the most life-changing (in my humble opinion). Except, they did NOTHING.

I could talk about this for hours, but a few things jump out to me.

  1. The size of a position matters a lot, especially in volatile markets.
  2. Having liquidity is your best friend; it helps avoid panic selling things you would otherwise hold for the long term.
  3. Have a framework or plan to exit. If this were your primary asset and you still refused to sell (even a small portion), that to me is a mistake. You're missing the larger point that money and having $2.8 billion in wealth provide. That is life-changing money; use it to your advantage.

Not an endorsement of Bitcoin, more interested in the psychological rollercoaster that crypto and markets take us on at times.

Paper Gains Show

This is our YouTube series geared towards those with $1 to $10 million in investable assets. Take a look for a strategic edge and practical insights.

While there are zero guarantees when it comes to the market, I did find this chart fascinating to continue with our AI theme. This is spending in billions by the largest hyperscalers (Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and Oracle). Who knows what the market will do, but spending is not slowing down in the next few years.

After I wrote this, I saw this post that I thought paired well with the above CapEx spending chart. These are simply data points and things to be aware of as you make business and investing decisions.

For all those Real Estate Investors out there. This one is for you.

General Musings

I have been doing this since April, same for the YouTube show. First of all, thanks for not unsubscribing.

This newsletter will remain educational, and I am always open to feedback if you have ways to improve. If you have friends, colleagues, or family who could benefit from what we're doing here. Please send them my way.

What I've Enjoyed Recently

Do you still need to own a house? This is a conversation topic that I know people have strong feelings towards. WSJ did an article, especially for those in retirement. This is a trend I don't expect will slow down in the coming decades.

Alex Hormozi on Money Wise. Though his numbers are larger than most, the lessons are surprisingly solid. I had a perception of him, but this was a solid episode.

Private Markets are all the rage in wealth management. This episode helps give you a framework of things to consider.

Paper Gains Newsletter by Matt Magee at mForce Capital Is College Worth It? But we're asking the wrong question entirely about college. Instead of 'Is college worth it?' we should be asking 'Which parts of college are working, and what does that tell us about the future?' The math is brutal for most graduates. Boomers could trade 4 years of college for 40 years of middle-class security (more or less). Today's 25-year-old faces a negative net-present-value on that same deal. When the...

Paper Gains Newsletter by Matt Magee at mForce Capital Quick Hits While I'm not much of a baseball fan, I'm always fascinated by stories where money intersects with sports. One of my favorites is the famous Bobby Bonilla contract with the New York Mets. Back in 2000, the Mets owed Bonilla $5.9 million. Instead of paying him immediately, they chose to defer the payment until 2011, agreeing to an 8% annual interest rate. Now, every July 1st from 2011 through 2035, Bonilla receives nearly $1.2...
